It's been a while since I've worked on my 'Soldier's Quilt' for a few reasons:
1) Christmas Gift makings
2) Holidays
3) It has no 'owner'
I don't know about you but I work better if I'm on a deadline and my heart is engaged in my quilt-making because I have a special recipient in mind.
I have wanted to make a quilt for a serviceman for some time, having seen lots of USA posts about it. I contacted a UK and USA organisation about passing my quilt on but never received a reply. So I'm a bit stuck and thought who better to help me out than my fellow quilters.
My colours represent the UK based charity - Help for Heroes flag:
Here's where I'm up to tonight:
And a close up of the fabrics:
I'm half way through piecing the top now and really want to carry on to a finish. This will end up being a decent sized lapquilt - about 65" x 65". I would have done more tonight but Nell wanted my chair:
One of my wonderful blogging friends, Jennie over at Porch Swing Quilts has found me a serviceman (please read her sweet comment below) so I now have a home for this quilt and I cant wait to finish it :) :) :)
What a shame that you have not received a reply to your inquiry. I do have quite a few charities listed on my Quilts 4 a Cause page, but hope someone can help you get some contact information. Your progress is wonderful in spite of your chair thief! Looking forward to seeing this one finished!
ReplyDeleteWhat a kind thing for you to do! It seems ridiculous that charities don't stay in touch with the people who want to help. Good luck!
ReplyDeleteWow that's a great pattern. I will ask on Instagram and see if I can get you some more help!
ReplyDeleteI know of some quilters who sent quilts a couple of years back. Not sure I know how to get in touch with them anymore, but I'm pretty sure they sent their quilts to Phoenix House, Catterick.
ReplyDeleteIt's coming along beautifully. I'm sure someone will love it :-)
What a great quilt, fab design!
ReplyDeleteYou don't mind it going to a US serviceman? I would help with the shipping, because I have just the man! He's still in Afghanistan, but he should be home in June of this year. I'm friends with his wife at church. Sweetest gal, and they had a little baby boy just before he left. If things weren't tough enough, her older brother (who is only 35) was diagnosed with 4th stage cancer at the beginning of this month, so they are going through a lot. If you want, they'd be a great home.
ReplyDeleteJennie, I am thrilled at your response - YES, YES, YES, I will now finish this for your friend. Thank you so much and I hope this little quilt will ease their troubles just a little :)
DeleteLooks great the colours make it very fresh looking. Some one will be lucky
ReplyDeleteCheers Pauline
This is going to be a stunner. What a great gift for a service man or woman. I have seen a lot of things about Quilts of Valor and have Fons and Porter's television show about it recorded, but haven't watched it yet. I'm sure it has info.
ReplyDeleteGiving it to the person above sounds like a great idea, too.
You are so wonderful and giving....
